Abstract
The available analytical solutions for the acceleration coefficients and for the potential flow around ellipsoids or spheroids immersed in fluid that is either infinite in extent or is bounded by a confocal ellipsoid surface are summarized. In particular the solutions for a rotating inner ellipsoid in the presence of a fixed outer confocal ellipsoid are revised in this paper. The above analytical results are used to check a three dimensional finite element potential flow analysis applied to a ship manoeuvring in an arbitrary shaped canal or water channel.
