Abstract
In this paper a ship-rudder system is considered as a low-aspect-ratio wing with a hinged flap. The model is restricted to single-rudder ships in deep water. A lifting-surface theory is used to compute the lateral forces on the ship caused by a rudder deflection. Attention is paid to the influence of the rudder’s length and height. The results are compared with those from slender-wing theory.
