Abstract
A method of predicting the longitudinal stresses induced on a ship hull in sea waves is presented. In short- and long-term seaways, the total normal stress and the total shearing stress on a longitudinal member can be predicted by using the variances of component sea loads and the covariances between those component loads. Exact application of this method is made for a large oil tanker in the North Atlantic Ocean and an approximate long-term correlation method is examined in comparison with the so-called square root method.
