Abstract
A description of a servo-operated wave-height measuring instrument is given. The instrument seeks to keep a probe at a given height above the water-surface using a capacitive-type proximity-transducer, which when used in conjunction with a linear displacement-transducer, enables a high accuracy to be achieved under dynamic conditions. The prototype instrument has been in use almost daily for the past year in the wave-tank at the University of Sussex.
