Abstract
This paper deals with the steady hydrodynamic problem of a single-rudder ship moving parallel to a vertical wall in shallow water. The ship-rudder system is considered as a wing with a flap. The main result of this theoretical study is that the sway force and yaw moment due to the presence of the wall (“bank suction”) can be cancelled by giving the rudder a suitable deflection towards the wall, at virtually zero yaw angle.
