Abstract
The main theme of this paper is to outline a mathematical evaluation of the motions of the ship and the tensile force in the warp, upon the occasion a beamtrawl becomes suddenly ‘fastened’ in an abrupt manner on an obstruction on the seabed e.g. a wreck during the operation of trawling.
In addition to the linearization of the problem the many approximations and assumptions made in this study will be outlined or considered.
This analysis has revealed a number of preliminary conclusions relating to ships stability and the strength of gear, which could well be of importance for both regulatory and design purposes.
