Abstract
A method is presented for estimating the propulsive performance of ships in irregular seas and in particular the direct speed loss due to added resistance in waves. The procedure takes into account the characteristics of the prime mover(s), transmission system(s), propulsor(s) and both hydrodynamic and aerodynamic drags for a specific ship and solves for the mean values of attained ship speed, shaft speed and propeller thrust and torque for a prescribed engine fuel rate in a given cave and wind environment. The paper concludes with several recommendations aiming to improve the prediction method and rendering it more useful for analytic, model and full-scale studies .
