Abstract
In this publication a U-shaped tank, consisting of two reservoirs with slightly inclining outside walls and connected by means of a conduit. is considered as a passive anti-rolling device for ships. The fluid motion in the tank caused by a harmonically rolling ship is described mathematically and expressed in the moment which is exerted on the ship by the tank fluid. To determine optimum tank dimensions, the rolling motion of a ship model, equipped with a U-tank, is also analysed for regular waves. The mathematical results were verified with experiments.
