Abstract
A program was instituted in 1959 at the Taylor Model Basin for the purpose of determining the correct modulus of rigidity in torsion for steel propulsion shafting of the types used presently by the U.S. Navy. In addition, it was desired to determine the most efficient method of obtaining the modulus and to investigate the effect of shaft temperature on the modulus, as well as the relative values of modulus for stub shafts and corresponding test coupons. Results are presented for test data obtained over the past 15 years.
