Abstract
The features and feasibility of sea-going catamaran ships are listed and discussed. Based on the feasibility study and preliminary design of an oceanographic vessel and on exploratory model tests, it is seen that the catamaran ship has excellent potential in many types of operation. Among other features, it has excellent resistance characteristics in the high speed/length displacement range, has exceptional stability and sea-keeping qualities, and affords unusually large deck areas for working space, accommodations, or cargo. Some possible applications and the particular advantages each could realize as catamaran ships are given.
