Abstract
A simple formula is given to estimate the midship wave bending moment for a wide range of wave lengths. The formula is derived assuming a quasi-static condition and low waves. It is shown that the bending moment is mainly dependent on the shape of the waterline. Comparison with the results of model tests makes it clear that dynamical effects are much more important than the non-linearity of the bending moment as is found in quasi- static calculations for high waves.
