Abstract
A heuristic-based model (HBM) that emulates the decision-making process involved in microsequencing components for printed circuit board (PCB) assembly is presented. The model uses a heuristic approach that combines the computer power with the reasoning of a human planner to generate the microsequencing plan of a semiautomated work cell. By using assembly planning criteria, sequencing decision rules, and data available from a computer-aided design system, the HBM defines a microassembly plan that simplifies the operator's role in PCB assembly and optimizes machine table movement. The article includes an example that describes the potential value of the model as a means of relaxing the transition from design to production.
