Abstract
Nowadays, there is a trend to extend the requirements for manufacturing systems. It is caused by the increasing needs for manufacturing flexibility and series time reduction as well as by the possibility of production variety and reduction of production and installation costs. Therefore, today it is necessary not only to introduce the most modern electronic controllers and information technology but also industrial communication systems. This paper presents typical application fields of different communication solutions such as Fieldbus networks for the sensors level and executive parts, I/O distributed modules and distributed control and communication for devices at the cell level. It also focuses on industrial (i.e., MAP3.0/MMS, Industrial Ethernet) and office communication standards. Finally, it describes a project carried out at the Institute of Production Engineering & Automation at Wrocław University of Technology that deals with an application of communication systems in manufacturing.
