Abstract
This paper describes the implementation of the TRAIN-ISS programme at Sheffield University's Department of Information Studies. The primary aim of the programme was to provide training to information service specialists from the Less Favoured Regions of the European Union. Thirty-two students were recruited from Spain, Portugal, Greece, Ireland, Italy and the Eastern Lander region of Germany. A curriculum was agreed by the contractors, the Department of Information Studies, University of Sheffield and INETI/CITI, and in consultation with practising information professionals and academics from the European Union. The course ran over two semesters in the academic year 1994/5, with the students working towards the award of a Diploma in Electronic Information Management. Industrial placements were organised for the students with experienced information providers from the more favoured regions of the European Union. The students completed this course successfully and were allowed to continue to an MSc in Electronic Information Management. The successful implementation of the Diploma/MSc in Electronic Information Management course at Sheffield has proved the feasibility of a European Masters Programme.
