Abstract
The Information Science Unit in the Faculty of Science of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid has been teaching courses on Information Science since 1974. Both general and specialised courses have been taught for about 20 years and some have been designed for a specific sector.
This Unit has been a pioneer in the training of information professionals and users. It should not be forgotten that classes in other Faculties in Spain did not begin until 1978.
Details of courses are given in this article, in particular those that are being given at present. Mention is also made of teaching methods, which are interactive, promote student participation and incorporate the latest electromechanical, computing and telematic technologies. Classes are supplemented by lectures given by qualified specialists and by visits to other important information centres.
The papers students write as end-of-course dissertations are published in Spanish and in Hispano-American journals.
The doctoral courses for users are practically the only ones at university level given in Spain. Among other advantages, they are available to graduates of any area and are inexpensive. Their interdisciplinary character should also be mentioned.
