Abstract
The fieldwork practicum is reviewed within an international library and information work context. The South African requirements for the practicum in education and training are outlined and the problems associated with various approaches analyzed. The planning and implementation of a simulated fieldwork program at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg is described. The objectives of the program and its phases are explained and the evaluation and overall value and problems of the program are discussed. Areas for further research are identified.
