Abstract
A brief description of the main aspects and objectives of continuing education (CE) is given, advancing a description of the situation in Brazil in the last two decades. The need for improving the professional librarian in highlighted as well as the requirements for planning, coordination and systematization of the efforts going on, through the establishment of a National Center; objectives and types of courses are suggested for this Center and perspectives for the near future are provided.
