Abstract
A study of fieldwork as a component of formal education for library and information science, carried out by means of a case study of a teaching programme at a university, investigated the role of professional socialisation in this programme. In this paper the negative and positive effects of socialisation are analysed and the mediating mechanisms in this process are identified. Based on the findings, recommendations are made to counter the negative effects such as dissonance of values experienced by a number of students.
