Abstract
The need to satisfy the information yearnings of the bulk of the African population has led to the refocusing of public library services in Africa to include rural community library and information services. Library schools, especially in Africa and other developing countries, should mount courses aimed at training these new professionals so that they would be better equipped to tackle this new area. This paper tries to draw the attention of library schools to courses suitable for these new professionals and for the retraining of existing staff.
