Abstract
Research is essential for the advancement of every profession. In the library and information profession library schools have a major responsibility for research. It is their duty to conduct research as well as train personnel for research. This article therefore examines the role of Nigerian library schools in teaching and conducting research and the problems encountered in the process. Fundamentally research methods courses are taught at bachelor's and master's degree levels where these courses are compulsory for every student. As part of the course, students are required to conduct some research projects. There are full research degree courses for the M.PhiL and Ph.D. in two schools. Library school teachers are also engaged in conducting their own research. However, insufficient numbers of qualified supervisors, few full-time research students, inadequate research funds and poor opportunities for publishing research findings are major problems.
