Abstract
The evolution from librarianship to LIS is briefly outlined showing a powerful trend towards a new conceptual framework for information provision and processing. Against this background, the Nordic library school system is reviewed with emphasis on the efforts to go beyond vocational training programmes into higher education and research. Recognizing the strong interrelationship between analytical reviews for policy decisions, research and development (R&D) work, and education for research, the LIS research situation in Sweden is described as an example of a general complex pattern. The numerous Swedish attempts to design control mechanisms for a coordinated national LIS programme and to institutionalize education for research in LIS are presented. In conclusion it is suggested that the thrust of development lies in the IS-end of the LIS-spectrum. If correct, librarians, library schools and funding agencies have to recognize the implications of this statement and the need for active participation in furthering the development of IS and building up a know-how so that significant change in professional roles does not become entirely controlled by technology.
