Products of graduate library and information science schools: untapped resources?

Abstract

This is a study of the employment situation and the types of positions potentially available for library and information science graduates. It presents a rather dismal picture for library and information science graduates. Certainly, it is evident that many positions require technical backgrounds, such as computer science and engineering. However, the relatively high ranking of communication and business administration majors indicates that this is not the sole consideration. In the less technical categories, such as technical writers, documentation specialists, editors, etc. in positions related to ‘preparing data or information for use by others’, library and information science respondents shed some light on the problem, which seems to centre around public relations.
