Abstract
Configuration is an application area of Artificial Intelligence that deals with the assembly of complex systems from a set of simpler components. Knowledge‐based configuration is one of the most successful application areas for expert systems and AI in general. Configuration systems have been developed and applied in a number of domains, such as electronics, computer and telecommunications manufacturing sales, chemical design and in the construction of industrial plants. This paper intends to give an overview over the different approaches in the field.
