Abstract
Change in the length of segments along the muscle elicited by electrical stimulation was measured on intact canine and pig papillary muscles that were held isometric end to end (overall). All papillary muscles showed a non-uniform pattern of contraction and extension along their length. The pattern of deformation was not unique. These observations are scrutinized in the light of current conflicts in papillary muscle mechanics.
