Abstract
An investigation has been made of the variation of erythrocyte flexibility within a large healthy population. It was found that the mean values of the erythrocyte flexibility of males and females were not significantly different, but the female values were more variable than the males. A small (ca. 3%) group of subjects was found to be very significantly different from the population at large. Evidence is presented to suggest that this difference is due to a membrane abnormality.
