Abstract
A general formula has been derived rigorously for the circumferential tension in a hollow cylindrical tube in equilibrium under constant internal and external pressure. The relationship between our formula and the law of Laplace is discussed. It is shown that the circumferential tension may take positive or negative value, depending upon the pressure and the radius of the tube.
