A novel class of N-alkyl-N,N-dimethyl[N-(pyridin-2-yl)carbamoyl]methylammonium chlorides (target products) was designed and synthesised by amidation and quaterisation. Five new compounds were obtained. The target products were characterised by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and elemental analysis. Surface activity and antibacterial activity of the target products was investigated. The critical micelle concentration and the efficiency of surfactant (C20) values of the target products are lower. The target products have good antibacterial activity for Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
