In the Friedländer reaction of 4-aryl-7,7-dimethyl-5-oxo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-[1]benzopyran-3-carbonitriles (1, 2), we have detected and isolated the unexpected imidates 5 and 6, respectively, in addition to the expected tetracyclic tacrine-like derivatives.
