A cyclic phosphinate 2 is formed when HO(CH2)n+3P(O)(NHPh)Ph (n = 0 or 1) is treated with acid (P–N bond cleavage); five-membered ring formation (n= 0) is 70 times faster than six in CHCI3 and 50 times faster in MeOH.
