Abstract
Summary
Free serotonin, in the presence of rabbit whole blood, is oxidized to 5-HIAA. The latter was identified by paper chromatography and by its fluorescence characteristics. Platelets or plasma do not produce the reaction. Evidence is presented that red blood cells, or possibly the white cells, are factors in the conversion of serotonin to 5-HIAA.
