Abstract
Summary
Clonic seizures were induced in the mouse and guinea pig by intracerebral injection of histamine. They were prevented by trimethadione, exacerbated by diphenyl-hydantoin, and incompletely controlled by acetazolamide. Apart from chlorpromazine, tranquilizing agents were ineffective. Cortisone and desoxycorticosterone caused mild exacerbation and some reduction in severity of seizures, respectively. Antihistaminics prevented histamine seizures in the guinea pig but not in the mouse. The difference in sensitivity of these species to histamine by intraperitoneal injection was less evident by the intracerebral route. Control of metrazol-induced seizures by histamine was a nonspecific antagonism. The possible relation of histamine to seizure mechanisms is discussed.
