Abstract
Summary
The presence of influenza virus or destruction of viral receptors on human red blood cells did not induce erythrophagocytosis by human white blood cells in presence of compatible serum in vitro. Influenza virus adsorbed onto periodate-treated red cells induced marked erythrophagocytosis in the presence of periodate-agglutinin deficient serum, while periodate-treated red cells without adsorbed virus were not phagocytized.
