Abstract
Summary
An adult patient is reported with hematologic abnormalities that were unresponsive to the usual hematopoietic agents, and characterized by a hypochromic anemia, leukocytosis, high serum iron and high per cent iron binding protein saturation. Measurements of the abnormal urinary excretion of the metabolites of 1-tryptophan following oral loading tests demonstrated an alteration in the metabolism of this amino acid. The clinical and laboratory abnormalities wrere promptly reverted to normal, and hematological remission followed intramuscular administration of pyridoxine hydrochloride.
