Abstract
Summary
Influenza B viruses obtained in 1954 and 1955 have been isolated directly in cultures of monkey kidney. The latter system was shown to be preferable to the amniotic sac of the chick embryo for this purpose since more viruses were isolated and only single passages were necessary. Factors have been described which serve to explain the mechanism of these advantages. Growth of these strains was accompanied by cytopathogenic effects in the epithelial cells of monkey kidney cultures.
