Abstract
Summary
Following whole body exposure to sublethal doses of X-rays, erythropoiesis was depressed in both dogs and rats, but could be markedly increased by bleeding the animals shortly before or after irradiation. In rats, post-irradiation administration of PAPP resulted in a similar increase in erythropoiesis. Blood loss 24 hours after irradiation had no appreciable effect. The data indicate the reversibility or modification of injury to the erythropoietic system without similarly affecting the recovery of other bone marrow elements.
