Abstract
Summary
Differences in hemagglutination behavior have been found to exist between mumps virus strains of different origins. Most strains tested were capable of hemagglutinating chicken, guinea pig and human Group C cells at 4°C, 22-24°C and 37°C. One strain did not agglutinate human Group O cells al any of these temperatures, and failed also to agglutinate chicken cells at 37° C. However this same strain was able to cause hemagglutination of guinea pig cells at all 3 temperatures. The implications of these findings in relation to laboratory testing for mumps virus has been discussed.
