Abstract
Summary
Parathyroid function has been studied in rats by determination of the changes produced immediately after parathyroid removal. Phosphate excretion by the kidney is markedly reduced within one hour after parathyroidectomy. This impairment of phosphate excretion is apparent in rats flooded with either calcium or phosphate ions after removal of the parathyroids. It is concluded, therefore, that in the rat the parathyroids at least in part control phosphate and calcium metabolism by a direct action on kidney excretion of phosphate.
