Abstract
Summary
A requirement of L. casei for calcium was induced by employing a reduced serine concentration in the basal medium. The calcium requirement was not demonstrable with a reduced concentration of any one of the remaining essential (for L. casei) amino acids. A marked increase in the sensitivity of response to calcium was obtained with reduced sodium concentrations, but the requirement for calcium in the low-serine medium persisted even at the lowest test levels of sodium.
