Abstract
Summary
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) has been found to depress the rate of oxygen consumption of the albino rat when injected intraperitoneally at dose levels as low as 1 mg/kg. A similar effect was observed with tryptamine and histamine (both of which are structurally related to serotonin) at much higher levels. This effect was not observed in the rabbit, guinea pig, or dog.
We wish to thank Professor Daniel Bovet for his advice and encouragement, and the Upjohn Company and Abbott Laboratories for their generous supply or serotonin creatinine sulfate.∗
