Abstract
Summary
The conversion of thiocyanate to cyanide was confirmed, and evidence was presented indicating that this reaction occurs rapidly in vitro in the presence of a red blood cell constituent, possibly an enzyme. Physiologically significant concentrations of cyanide were observed in the blood of patients with serum thiocyanate values even below therapeutic levels. The evidence was felt to support the suggestion that the biological effects generally ascribed to thiocyanate may be caused in part by cyanide.
