Summary
When unfixed skin collagen, which ordinarily is only lightly orthochromatic, is treated with pepsin it becomes metachromatic. Trypsin does not have this effect. Collagen denatured by alcohol or formalin fixation is rendered metachromatic by both pepsin and trypsin.
