Abstract
Summary
Chronic administration of morphine in doses increasing from 20 mg/kg/day to 200 mg/kg/day over a period of 8 weeks to young albino rats resulted in a marked suppression of growth. This occurred in spite of a greater food intake per unit of body weight. In addition, the animals receiving morphine demonstrated a significant reduction in their respiratory quotients at the 48 hour withdrawal period. The interpretation of the changes in metabolic rate is not apparent on the basis of the results obtained.
