Abstract
Summary
Several antibiotic substances were found in the ether-soluble extract of the mycelium of various cultures of S. griseus, which differed in their chemical nature and antimicrobial activities. One of these fractions from S. griseus No. 3533, designated as streptocin, possesses strong trichomonadicidal properties. It is active against gram-positive bacteria. Small amounts of streptocin are also present in the culture filtrate of the organism.
Streptocin is distinct from actidione in its physical and chemical properties and in the nature of its antimicrobial spectrum.
