Abstract
Summary
Two Duroc pigs were fed hexahomoserine (α-amino, β-hydroxy caproic acid) for a period of 27 days. A marked lowering of the red blood cell count was observed in both animals. No major constituent of the blood, except the red blood cell, was affected. In addition to developing anemia, the pigs made no significant weight gains after one week on the diet containing hexahomoserine, and it is concluded that the amino acid inhibits growth.
