Abstract
Summary
The methyl and ethyl quaternary ammonium salts of procaine and of the analogous compound in which the ethyl groups are replaced by methyl groups were prepared. They were studied pharmacologically, especially with regard to their ability to modify some of the effects of acetylcholine, and their properties were compared with those of the hydrochlorides of the tertiary amines. No support was found for the theory that inhibition of acetylcholine action in this series is dependent upon similarity in chemical structure.
