Abstract
Summary and Conclusions
The inhibition of adenosinetriphosphatase by mercaptide forming compounds and by mild oxidizing agents, and the reactivation by glutathione can be considered as proof that adenosinetriphosphatase is a sulfhydryl enzyme. The close parallelism between the number of -SH groups of myosin attacked by p-CIHg benzoate and oxidizing agents and the degree of inhibition of adenosinetriphosphatase activity is evidence in favor of Engelhardt's assumption that myosin and adenosinetriphosphatase are identical.
