Summary
Nerve fibers regenerating in a nerve with localized constriction are greatly reduced in caliber and delayed in myelinization at all levels distal to the constriction. Scar tissue, therefore, presents not only a local impediment to the outgrowth of regenerating fibers, but a continued hazard to their maturation.
