Abstract
Summary
1. Isotonic Na2SO4 and isotonic MgSO4 caused moderate stimulation of motility in Thiry-Vella jejunal loops; when prolonged, isotonic MgSO4 caused depression of motility and tone. 2. Hypertonic solutions of NaCl, Na2SO4 or MgSO4 caused depression of motility, with short periods of spasticity accompanied by symptoms of nausea. 3. Recovery after hypertonic NaCl or Na2SO4 was prompt, but after depression of motility by MgSO4 recovery was slow. 4. Using a constant inflow pressure, flow bore an inverse relationship to motility. 5. Rate of contraction was unaffected by the agents employed.
