Summary
In the destruction of thrombin by plasma “antithrombin,” heparin serves merely as a catalyst. The amount of thrombin eventually destroyed by a given amount of plasma is dependent fundamentally upon the amount of co-factor present. The concentrations may be expressed by the following equation:
where Y is the amount of thrombin destroyed, X is the amount of thrombin remaining, and P is the amount of plasma (bovine) present in the reaction mixture.
