The acid-base balance of the blood of a normal adult at rest has been found to vary (in a regular, not random manner) during a 24-hour period due to the following factors: (a) a rise in plasma HCO3 associated with the ingestion of food; (b) an increase in the CO2 tension of the blood associated with sleep.
